Hypothyroidism Depression And Anxiety

May 15, 2022

Could Your Depression Or Anxiety Be Caused By Undiagnosed Hypothyroidism?

Do you struggle with chronic anxiety or depression that often prevents you from accomplishing everyday tasks or being involved in your regular activities?

Anxiety and depression are considered mental health diseases that can build through years of experiences and genetics. But there can be another cause that many people aren't aware of, and therefore don't consider when going for treatment. Both anxiety and depression can be caused by conditions that change the way your body is intended to operate...Hypothyroidism, or Hoshimoto's, is one of those conditions.

When your body is lacking or deficient in the thyroid hormone, Hypothyroidism occurs, meaning you don't have the right amount of the thyroid hormone for your body to work properly, which can impact many areas of your brain.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism:

  • Weight gain
  • Sleep problems
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness in joints and muscles
  • Hair loss
  • Depression
  • Dry skin
  • Lack of focus
  • Mood changes

Hyperthyroidism, anxiety and depression...

Thyroid hormones regulate the neurotransmitters in your brain, such as serotonin, GABA, acetylcholine and dopamine, which regulate your motivation, moods and executive functions. When your brain is not receiving enough thyroid hormone, your neurotransmitters begin acting abnormally, possibly causing anxiety and/or depression.

Over the years, people have begun to try and manage their depression using antidepressants, which aren't effective for many people, possibly because they need to address the health of their thyroid.

If you're wondering if your depression or anxiety is caused by your thyroid, talk to your functional medicine doctor who can thoroughly evaluate your thyroid function to see if there is a correlation with your mood.
