Acid Reflux Causes

October 7, 2021

What Could Be Causing Your Acid Reflux And Indigestion?

Acid reflux is a condition that many people suffer with, and it is often recurring or chronic. It occurs when gastric fluid (the acid content of the stomach) flows back up into the esophagus.

Its symptoms are:

  • Heartburn or acid indigestion - a burning pain that moves from your stomach to your chest, and sometimes your throat.
  • Dyspepsia - stomach discomforts such as: upper abdominal pain, bloating, burping and nausea after eating.
  • Regurgitation - as the stomach acid backs up into your throat or mouth, you can experience a bitter, sour taste and/or "wet burps".

If you're someone who struggles with acid reflux, you're probably trying to determine what is causing this painful condition and what you can do to put a stop to it...here are two possibilities...

Could you have low stomach acid or Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid is an important part of your digestive processes and without it, you are unable to digest proteins, and additionally:

  • It helps create a sterile condition for your gut.
  • It is important to the process of breaking down, digesting and absorbing nutrients.
  • It plays an integral part in naturalizing pathogens, changing the pH balance of the gastrointestinal tract, and impacting microbiome diversity.

Some of the symptoms of low Hydrochloric Acid are:

  • Reflux and/or heartburn
  • Gas and/or bloating
  • Stomach heaviness after eating
  • Trouble digesting proteins

If your digestive system isn't working properly, acid reflux can occur.

Could Gallbladder sludge be your problem?

Your gallbladder can also cause indigestion or acid reflux...it is responsible for releasing bile into the body, which facilitates the digestion of fat. Gallbladder sludge is created when the bile builds up, thickens, and can't be released. This can cause the formation of stones which can block the gallbladder from working altogether.

Some of the symptoms that gallbladder sludge is present are:

  • Bloating and stomach distention
  • Reflux and/or indigestion
  • Trouble digesting acidic or fatty foods

Again, if your digestive system isn't working properly, acid reflux can occur.

If you are repeatedly experiencing acid reflux and any of the symptoms listed above, it's a good idea to make an appointment with a doctor of functional medicine to determine the causes and how to eliminate them.
