How to Boost Your Brain Function Naturally

As we age, we are always concerned about good heart health, and rightfully so, but there is another critical part of our body that you don't hear as much about keeping healthy and functioning properly, and that's our brain.

Like so many other parts of our body, our brains change as we age, thus mental function also changes, and brain deterioration can begin and illness such as dementia and Alzheimer's can set in. Are you aware that you have a 1 out of 3 chance of devloping one of these mental illnesses? Those aren't very good odds...wouldn't you like to do solmething about that?

The good news is that you can! There are things you can do to boost your brain function...thus boosting your brain health.

Our brains are amazing...not only can they store unlimited amounts of information, but they can, at any age continue to produce new brain cells...

Let's start with BDNF

If you're like most people, you have no idea what BDNF is...BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) is a protein that many consider a brain fertilizer. It's function is:

  • to protect brain cells
  • to repair brain cells that are failing
  • to help the brain develop new connections.

When your BDNF protein levels are high, your brain is functioning well, it's easier to remember things, and you are happier. But if those protein levels take a dive as you are aging, then learning is more dificult, remembering is more difficult, it's easier to become depressed, and dementia can occur.

***On a side note BDNF is also very important for a healthy heart, and may play a key role in our life span..

Can we reverse the effects of lower BDNF levels?

Fortunately for us, there are ways to raise those BDNF levels in order for our brain and heart to continue functioning at optimal levels.

  1. Exercise your body - If you currently don't have an exrcise routine - even a small one - start now! Exercise is the very best way to raise your BDNF.
  2. Exercise your brain - Just like other muscles in your body...use it or lose it. Do things like:
    1. Reading
    2. Puzzles
    3. Artwork
    4. Crafts
    5. Play cards or games
    6. Any activity that stimulates your brain
  3. Pay more attention to your diet - 
    1. Fast periodically
    2. Avoid, as much as possible, highly processed foods, sugars and high fructose corn syrup, and foods high in bad fats
    3. Eat more fruits, nuts, vegetables, oily fish and foods with unsatuated oils
  4. Spend time with people you enjoy - family and friends that make you happy
  5. Reduce your stress - when you are feeling stressed, you produce less BDNF
    1. If possible, avoid people who make you feel stressed
    2. Take time for yourself every day, even if it's only a few minutes...do things you enjoy such as reading, take a walk, listen to music, enjoy a hot shower or bath, connect with a loved one...choose something that relaxes you and makes you happy.
  6. Get enough sleep - your goal should be at least 7 hours of sleep each night.
