Keto Diet

What is the Keto Diet and Why Should You Use It?

People everywhere are jumping on the Keto Diet (Ketogenic Diet) bandwagon…never heard of it? It isn’t new, it’s actually been around since the 1920s…20 decades ago! So I guess that disqualifies it from being a “fad diet”, even though it is a fast way to lose weight.

What is the Keto Diet and how does it work?

The reason this diet helps people lose fat is because it targets the carbs that we eat…it guides us toward eating low carbs, moderate proteins and high fats in order for your body to reach ketosis, a metabolic state which occurs when your body has used or run out of  its stored sugars and begins to look for other sources of energy. At this point, your liver will kick in and begin to change fat into ketones, and they become your body’s main energy source. Your body begins burning fat, rather than sugar.

The Keto Diet is relatively simple to follow:

  • Reduce carbs (you don’t have to give them up, just reduce your intake)
    • Carbs are more than just grains, they also include:
      • Dairy
      • Fruit and fruit juice
      • Starchy vegetables such as corn or potatoes
      • Sweets
      • Breads and pasta

  • Incease healthy fats such as:
    • Olive oil
    • Nuts
    • Avocados
    • Whole eggs
    • Dark chocolate (that’s easy for most people)
    • Cheese
    • Fish such as tuna, salmon, lake trout, sardines and herring

But the Keto diet is more than a weight loss program, here are some of the

Other benefits you can expect from following the Keto plan…

If you’re going to try the Keto Diet to lose unwanted pounds, you’ll also be pleased at some of the other benefits your body can experience.

  • If you are a Type II Diabetic, the Keto Diet can help lower your A1C levels, if you are not a Type II, it can lower your risk of becoming one.
  • It can reduce the risk of heart disease as well as lowering blood pressure.
  • Reduce high LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and inceases  HDL (good) cholesterol levels
  • It is suggested that the Keto diet may help to starve cancer cells, which feed upon glucose rather than fat
  • By changing your body’s energy source from sugar to fat, the Keto diet has been used to treat brain disorders such as…
    • Alzheimer’s
    • Neurological disorders
    • Cognitive empairments
    • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Because energy levels from sugar rise and fall, and fat is a more consistent source of fule/energy, you may find yourself having better focus (which requires energy), along with more physical energy and stamina.
