Does Your Brain Affect Your Health?

Chiropractic Neurology - Lake Washington ChiropracticYour brain, believe it or not, is like plastic!

Just as plastic can be molded to change its functionality, with the proper encouragement, the brain can change it’s functionality as well!

It has only been in the last decade that 100 years of stubborn dogma, which stated that the human brain was unchangeable, has become changed itself.

It was previously thought that the brains of mammals were fixed in two ways:

  • First – it was believed that no new neurons could be produced after birth.
  • Second – it was believed that the functions of the central nervous system – brain and spinal cord alike – were permanently fixed.

Technology has made the difference…

However due to advances in technology almost like the progress from the camera to the video recorder we are learning how dynamic the brain really is. Newsweek Science writer Sharon Begley in her bestselling book “Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform Ourselves” helps us understand how this thought was proven incorrect, but she also describes how, through our efforts, the human brain can be modulated or changed.

NervesWe now know that if a neuron can be stimulated it can grow stronger in its communication to other neurons and can give rise to new neurons, this gives the brain an amazing capacity to re-organize itself to maximize function and to compensate for lost function.

This exciting discovery has led to an explosion in research and public interest.

In the last few years numerous articles have appeared in such magazines as:

  • Time Magazine
  • Newsweek
  • Science
  • National Geographic
  • Scientific American

The concept that the brain can be re-shaped is the most exciting discovery in neuroscience in the last 100 years! This information is now being used clinically; the science of “neuroplasticity” has given rise to the practice of functional neurology, a method of locating a patient’s specific neurological weaknesses and designing therapy to enhance the performance of the brain and nervous system.

Because the treatments are based on function, it cannot only help people who suffer with a wide variety of neurologic conditions, but also people who are interested in improving their overall health as well.

I am a board certified chiropractic physician, specializing in functional neurology at the Kirkland Health Institute. I combine functional neurology, chiropractic with metabolic testing and nutritional therapy to address all contributing factors that contribute to chronic conditions.

Some of the conditions that I have seen remarkable improvement in is chronic pain/fibromyalgia, headaches/migraines, dizziness/vertigo, peripheral neuropathy, traumatic brain injury recovery, fatigue and auto-immune conditions.
